Signs your system may need cleaning

What sludge does to a heating system
Magnetite and other corrosion debris collect in the lowest points of radiators and in narrow pipework. As the build-up grows, the boiler has to run longer to reach temperature, circulation becomes uneven, and components under load — particularly the pump and heat exchanger — wear more quickly.
The power flushing process
- We inspect the system and confirm flushing is appropriate
- A pumping unit is connected to the heating circuit
- Cleaning chemicals are circulated to break down sludge and scale
- Each radiator is flushed in turn, with flow reversed to lift debris
- The system is flushed through with clean water until it runs clear
- A corrosion inhibitor is added to protect the system
- We test the system and check radiator performance before leaving
How long it takes
A typical domestic system takes most of a day, depending on the number of radiators and how heavily contaminated the system is. Larger or badly sludged systems can take longer, and we will give you a realistic idea before starting.
What improvement to expect
Cleaning a contaminated system usually improves circulation and evens out radiator temperatures, and a system that heats up properly does not have to run as long. The scale of any change depends on how poor the circulation was to begin with, so we will not promise a fixed percentage saving on your energy bills — no one honestly can.
When power flushing is not the right answer
Power flushing is not a fix for every heating complaint. If radiators are cold because the system needs balancing, a valve has seized, the pump has failed, or the radiators are simply undersized for the room, flushing will not solve it.
Very old pipework, systems with existing leaks or heavily corroded radiators can also be at risk during a flush. We assess the system first and recommend an alternative — such as a chemical clean, targeted radiator removal or fitting a magnetic filter — where that is the more sensible route.
Protecting the system afterwards
Once a system is clean, a corrosion inhibitor and a magnetic filter help keep it that way. Inhibitor levels should be checked at each annual service, which we can do when we service your boiler.
